A non-invasive estimate of glomerular filtration rate derived from nonequilibrium thermodynamics

Abstract: "nAcute kidney injury is characterised by elevated serum creatinine and reduced urine output, both of which reflect reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The estimation of GFR is usually obtained from an empirical expression based on the serum creatinine concentration, although other analytes are also used. The selection of the ‘best' analyte and expression has been the subject of much debate. The thermodynamic foundation of GFR leads to an expression for GFR in terms of urine volume and osmotic potential, both of which are easily and non-invasively measured. This expression is consistent with at least some of the data in the literature and provides insight into some of the apparent inconsistency in the relationship between GFR and urine volume. While more complete data are required to evaluate it thoroughly, the expression complements the analyte-based methods for estimating GFR.

Abstract: The behavior of enzyme-catalyzed reactions is not made clear to many students by the standard mathematical description of enzyme kinetics. An enzyme-machine analogy is described that has made the details of the Michaelis-Menten mechanism and the associated kinetics more accessible with minimal use of mathematics. Students taught using the analogy appear to have fewer of the misconceptions than those taught using a more mathematical approach.

Abstract: The photosynthetic solar constant is revised by considering experimental determinations of the wavelength-dependence of photosynthetic quantum efficiency and absorbance. Using the efficiency of the light-independent metabolic phase of photosynthesis, a new estimate of 17.5 W m-2 is obtained for the photosynthetic solar constant.

On the distribution of the largest part of unrestricted partitions of small integers

Abstract: Several theoretical estimates of the distribution of the parts of integer partitions have been published. Generally these are asymptotically correct for large integers, but practical applications require that the distribution be known for small integers (n ￡ 1000). The largest part (or the number of parts) of an unrestricted partition of the integer n has the extreme value distribution, in agreement with the theoretical estimates. Expressions approximating the mode and variance of the distribution are given for n ￡ 1000 that represent significant improvements over the asymptotically correct theoretical expressions.
